Best Sledding Hills in Missoula
Now that we finally have snow, let’s talk about the best places to head out with the family for a fun day of sledding. We’ve got local favorites in every neighborhood and tips on which age groups each hill is best for. We’ve also included a handy dandy map at the bottom, since many of these spots don’t exactly have signs or addresses.
Blue Mountain
There’s a reason you’ll find Blue Mountain at the top of every list for “Favorite Sledding Hills.” It really is one of our biggest and most popular. But because it is popular, it can be quite busy, but older kids, teens and grownups (even dogs) will have a blast. It is great for large groups and adrenaline junkies. To get there, drive to the upper parking lot past the main trailhead.
Rainbow Park & Nicole Park
The Linda Vista area has lots of great options for sledding. Here is how to get to the two most popular (but check out Maloney Ranch Park too)! If you take Lower Miller Creek road to Linda Vista, on the left hand side you’ll see Rainbow Park. This hill is pretty wide, so although it does get busy, usually you can safely carve out your own area to sled without the fear of running into someone else. If you are there at peak times and need to try something a little slower placed, just keep heading up Linda Vista and right around the corner on the right hand side you’ll see Nicole Park! Rainbow Park is pretty steep, but both parks have sledding for all ages.
Pleasantview:
The perfect sledding hill for little ones is just one block past Hellgate Elementary on Flynn Lane is a large grassy area with a culvert. The gentle slopes and easy walk up and down is perfect for even the littlest legs. Local Tip: for the best parking, park on Fleet Street.
Corner of Tower and Spurgin:
Just south of the baseball fields there are two small hills, great for younger kids. Plus it is centrally located, so for kids who may not have the stamina for an all day adventure, this is a great option.
University of Montana Golf Course:
Another great option for all ages. Right around Hole #3 on the southeast corner of the University of Montana Golf Course, there are smooth runs, bumpy runs, jumps, and the steep climb of Mount Sentinel, all at one convenient location. A true local favorite for a reason.
Wapikiya Park:
This neighborhood park is great because it has hills for kids just starting out and a slopes for a speedier rides as well. This one is easy to find
Missoula International School (formerly Prescott School):
Unless you live in the Lower Rattlesnake, you may not realize that the former Prescott School building (now home to Missoula International School) has a great hill for younger kids.
