How To Be a Conscientious Consumer During Re-Opening

As more businesses begin to re-open, many people are looking forward to patronizing some of their favorite retailers and getting their quarantine haircuts fixed.

For all businesses in Missoula County, health assessments are required to be done on employees at the start of each shift. High traffic areas must be disinfected and social distancing must be maintained. You’ve seen many of these changes around town already. Plexiglass barriers protect cashiers, waiting areas like lobbies remain closed, and employees can be seen wearing masks.

In order to responsibly re-join the economy, keep in mind some of these tips to help keep the staff and other customers comfortable and safe.

Be patient

As business navigate the new normal and adhere to restrictions, you can expect wait times that are longer than usual. For service providers like hair dressers, massage therapists, and even dentists they have entire rosters of clients and patients they are trying to squeeze in. So here’s your reminder to be patient. Many workers are still without childcare and businesses are adapting to decreased staff and increased sanitation procedures. Give them grace and be thankful for their efforts.

call ahead

Your favorite thrift store, coffee shop, or grocery store might be temporarily functioning with restricted hours or services. Check online or call ahead before venturing out to confirm their availability. Find out if they have takeout, curbside pickup, or delivery services you can utilize!

follow the rules

If a business is requiring a mask or limiting group size, follow the rules! Do your part to maintain social distancing, keep your shopping trips short, and don’t buy more than you need. Be respectful, follow the rules, and thank the staff for doing their part to keep you safe.

be flexible

By now a number of businesses have shifted their focus from storefront sales to online purchases with curbside pickup. When possible, continue shopping online rather than browsing the brick and mortar location. This will allow the store to continue serving customers who need face-to-face interaction without going over their limit for safe social distancing.

see sOmething, say something (Privately)

Concerned about a staff member improperly wearing a mask or not wearing a mask at all? Curious what a company’s sanitation procedures include? Ask to speak to a manager or reach out to the business once you leave. Voice your concerns privately and give them an opportunity to rectify a sticky situation or address any gaps in their training and procedures. Please don’t blast businesses on social media unless they intentionally disregard concerns. Don’t forget to acknowledge staff and businesses who are doing things right. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts!

Remember, we are all in this together so being mindful of how we treat others will go a long way in helping get through this pandemic!
