New Bridge Includes a Cool Feature for Bikes

So many times we see people lugging their bikes up and down the big staircase near Caras park, but did you know there’s an easier way?

A bike channel is included in the new and improved stairs on the North/West Side of the newly constructed Bear Tracks Bridge (formerly known as Higgins Bridge). Along each out edge, simple put your bicycle in the channel and walk it up, or down as you head to your next destination! Bicycle stairways are not a new concept, but in a town like Missoula, they are a welcome addition!

The newly finished portion of the bridge, which connects downtown Missoula to the Hip Strip along Higgins Avenue has been highly anticipated as it replaced an old, dilapidated portion of sidewalk that was so narrow it was unsafe and inaccessible for many strollers, wheelchairs, bike and others. Although the new portion is a vast improvement, there have also been concerns raised about the higher temperatures of the panels that were used and safety concerns for pets. Warnings signs have been posted while more information is gathered. We’ll be following along to see how it is resolved.
