Nationally Known Parenting Training Now Enrolling in Missoula

Ever wondered why you need to complete 13 years of school to become an adult, but you don’t need any kind of degree to become a parent? When we brought our first-born home from the hospital, my husband and I mused that no one required us to take a test before taking him home.

Strong communities need strong families, and that’s why the Missoula County Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) exists. For parents and caregivers ready to level up their skills this year, PLTI is enrolling its 2023 cohort.

This free 15-week program in civics, democracy, and leadership designed for parents and caregivers who want to make a difference in their communities – but might not yet have the knowledge and practical skills to know how or where to begin. PLTI helps parents who care become parents who lead.

Participants will graduate with the knowledge, practical tools, and professional and leadership skills they need to become community leaders and change makers. This second cohort of the national curriculum is based on the premise that caregivers and youth are the best advocates for children and families in our communities – and that increasing access to civic skills will lead us all toward a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable democracy.

Participants receive meals and child care during the weekly sessions, along with transportation assistance if needed, and 1:1 support from a dedicated Site Coordinator.

The 2023 PLTI Program includes:

  • Initial all-day retreat on Saturday, March 11th, 2023 to build relationships and develop goals amongst the cohort.

  • 15-week series of weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings from March 15th thru June 28th from 5:30-9 PM at Missoula Public Library. (We will be skipping Wednesday, March 22nd as this falls during spring break for many area schools.)

  • Weekly sessions focus on understanding our diverse personal experiences and how to communicate across differences, knowledge about the change process, skill building for developing leaders, and tools of civic engagement.

  • PLTI offers the chance to meet with local and state-level policy makers, elected officials, media professionals, and experienced community leaders.

  • All participants will develop and complete a personal community project with support from the Missoula County PLTI Coordinator.
