Explore Montana: Redsun Labyrinth
Did you know that Victor, Montana is home to one of the largest walking meditation labyrinths in the United States? That’s right! Redsun Labyrinth is a 108 foot in diameter stone walking path set amidst a peaceful garden.
Us three ladies from 406 Families loaded up all our kids and headed for a visit to the Bitterroot. After a scenic drive, we pulled up to a small gravel parking area only big enough for a few cars. A decorated gate opened up to beautifully maintained grounds set on private property and teaming with butterflies.
Immediately upon entering the property, one of the kids was stung by a bee. After a few hugs from mom and the distraction of butterflies, the kids led the way to the marked path that would take us to the labyrinth. We deposited our $3 suggested donations at the interior entrance, where more information and picked lavender were waiting for us.
We all short walk through lush foliage, which was stroller friendly, but the pile of bowling balls sitting in a metal circle really grabbed the kids’ attention. We never saw an explanation for the bowling balls, but it made everyone smile and wonder.
When we arrived outside of the labyrinth, there was one other person already there. Our seven children that we had in tow, aren’t exactly known for adding to the tranquility of a space, so we spent some time playing in the wood swing suspended from a tree, and playing in the sand and on rocks. We also used the time to explain to our children some more about taking a quiet moment to reflect, being respectful of the other person enjoying their time there, and promising that if they did a good job, we would stop for ice cream afterwards. Not trusting if ice cream was a great enough motivator, we challenged the older kids to follow the entire path, just like a maze, without crossing over of touching the edges of the path at all.
The view is breathtaking. The entire area around the labyrinth is filled with lavender, grape vines, flowers, and more, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Bitterroot Mountain Range. We snacked on delicious juneberries that were growing and admired trinkets left by others at the center of the pattern.
To be honest, a lot of the beauty and serenity was lost on our children. It also probably didn’t help that our kids were so excited to see one another and play, since there are only so many socially distanced activities we can do. Despite their energy, we all had a very nice time, but the adults would relish an opportunity to experience a visit alone or even for a date night?
About Redsun Labyrinth
First opened to the public on December 31, 1999, Redsun Labyrinth was built by Patty and Helmut Meyers over the course of two years.
The total walk in and out is 4/5 of a mile. Approximately 25 tons of fieldstones were used to make the pattern.
The berm around the labyrinth is 120' in diameter, 3' high and topped with cottonwood logs. 173 lavender plants encircle the inside of the base.
The original 800 year-old pattern for this eleven circuit labyrinth is in Chartres Cathedral in France the Cathedral celebrated its 1000 year anniversary in 2001. This pattern is also in the Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
